Party at the Point featuring Dead 27's & BYOG

Party at the Point season is underway, and the last two weeks have been nothing short of incredible. What better way to say "bring on the weekend!" than with your friends, families and amazing live music in the paradise that we like to call the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina? This week, we're partying with local favorites, Dead 27's and BYOG. Here's the scoop:

Dead 27's

"...Creative and timeless music with impassioned veracity...a refreshing blend of song-craft and musicianship..."
Terry Adams, Charleston Magazine, May 2014

(First off- who can do Tedeschi Trucks justice like that? Nailed it!)

So a little bit about the band:

Sometimes the stars and planets align and things that can be difficult come surprisingly easy. Such is the case with the formation of Dead 27s. After playing a few casual gigs, the obvious chemistry could no longer be ignored. Since 2012, the band has been on a mission. Relentlessly making their way through the booming Charleston, SC music scene, the Dead 27s garnered the attention and praise of local media, calling them, "the exciting new band to watch" and fan support soon followed. In 2013, Dead 27s took home multiple Charleston City Paper Music Awards for “Song of the Year”, “Rock Band of the Year”, “Up and Coming Artist of the Year”, and guitarist Wallace Mullinax was honored with his second straight award as Charleston’s “Guitarist of the Year”. The band has since opened for Toubab Krewe, Patterson Hood, Col. Bruce Hampton, Orgone, Chris Robinson Brotherhood and shared the stage at festivals with many others. Their sound has been described as “a Southern blend of rock and soul”. In April 2014 and to much critical acclaim, Dead 27s released their 7 song debut, "Chase Your Devils Down”. In summer 2014, the band was honored to place in the top 24 for Vh1's “Make a Band Famous” competition. Although their sound comes from many different influences, the band has their focus on the future. Currently touring while writing and recording, the band continues to gain momentum as they spread their music across the country.

In current news:

  • Recording a new album in Fall 2015 with Grammy nominated producer and saxophonist for Galactic, Ben Ellman
  • 6 Charleston Music Awards received in 2014 for:
    • Rock Band of the Year
    • Song of the Year for "Don't Comfort Me"
    • Album of the Year for "Chase Your Devils Down"
    • Guitarist of the Year for Wallace Mullinax (3rd straight year)
    • Drummer of the Year for Daniel Crider
    • Bassist of the Year for Oliver Goldstein
  • Appeared on VH1's 2014 "You Oughta Know Presents Make a Band Famous" - Top 24
  • The band has opened for Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Patterson Hood, Col. Bruce Hampton and Orgone to name a few

If you're not already a fan, come prepared to buy all of their music after the show wraps up.

Spotlight: Departure (The Ultimate Journey Tribute Band)

In preparation for this Friday's Party at the Point, we're going to tell you a little bit about our first headlining band. They call themselves DEPARTURE, and they can play your favorite Journey tunes better than anybody else in the game. After 7 years together, DEPARTURE has become the most respected Journey tribute band in the nation. DEPARTURE replicates the look, sound and feel of the original 80’s rock super group. The five band members are the original line up and have developed an amazing on-stage chemistry. These veteran musicians pride themselves on giving their audience an incredible high-energy, qualitative stage show from start to finish. Featured lead vocalist, Brian Williams, has an amazing singing voice flawlessly matching Steve Perry’s vocal range and movements, exactly. DEPARTURE also highlights the early Journey years, when Gregg Rolie was lead singer, featuring Joel Hayes on keys and lead vocals. In 2009, Joel was named "Best Keyboardist in Atlanta" for his work representing Jonathan Cain and Gregg Rolie. DEPARTURE performs over two hours with no break, highlighting all the hit songs that everyone knows and loves, to give the audience the true concert experience. Their performance is professional and highly engaging for their audience. Everything heard during their performance is live with no pre-recorded tracks used. DEPARTURE was voted “Best Local Entertainer” for 2011 and 2012 by Gwinnett Magazine. Performing approximately one-hundred shows annually, DEPARTURE brings the very best of Journey to audiences of all ages.  Check out what these guys can do below! We can't wait to rock out with them on Friday.

Chatham County Line Recap

This past Thursday, we celebrated EFM owner Rob Lamble's birthday at the Woolfe Street Playhouse, listening to awesome tunes by local favorite Red Cedar Review and Raleigh Newgrass legends, Chatham County Line. We had been looking forward to this show for months and it was so much fun to see everything come together. The most rewarding part of our jobs is seeing all of our friends have a great time.  The night started off with Red Cedar Review, who majorly impressed everybody in the room. Among many highlights was this moment captured below:

After Red Cedar Review finished their set, Chatham County Line took the stage and started off by playing a very special Happy Birthday to Rob, in which everybody joined in.  When they began playing their music, jaws all over the Woolfe Street Playhouse dropped. The harmonies that CCL pulls off are otherworldly. It is safe to say that anybody who went in blind definitely left the show as a new and enthusiastic Chatham County Line fan. Here are a few of our favorite shots from the night:

Once the show was over, we had some serious celebrating to do. The EFM team & friends headed over to The Alley for a bowling extravaganza, and were shortly after joined by members of Chatham County Line and Red Cedar Review. We ate, we drank, we were merry and it was the perfect way to top off a lovely evening. Thank you so much to everybody who came out and supported live music! We love you all and can't wait to see you at the next one.

Needtobreathe classic

This is such a fun event for such a good cause and we're always blown away by how well it comes together. Thank you to all who participated in helping raise money for Palmetto Medical Initiative!

The intimate showcase before the tournament was awesome and the room looked beautiful! The Cedar Room at the Cigar Factory is such a versatile venue. It is always a great time seeing it come together.

The Post-Tournament show was also amazing! Thank you to all who helped make this event a huge success. We were so lucky to be joined by some amazing musicians like Matt Kearney, Switchfoot, American Authors and Need to Breathe.

Goodbye First Flush Festival

For 9 years First Flush Festival was a family friendly day celebrating the first harvest or “flush”of the tea leaves for the season. This annual event consisted of live music, local artisan vendors, a kids area, food trucks, drinks and of course TEA! The festival has played host to artists such as Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, The Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow & great home-grown Charleston acts like Stop Light Observations.

It has been a great 9 years filled with wonderful memories. Regrettably, we will not be continuing the tradition this year. We thank you for all the support.

March Newsletter

February has come and gone and we have so much to be thankful for/excited about as we ease into March.  Between putting on the Radney Foster show at the Woolfe Street Playhouse this past weekend, meeting with local musicians to discuss exciting new projects, planning Party at the Point (and some crazy awesome events in the coming months that we have yet to announce!!) and all of our day to day projects, we have been fully engrossed in our work and could not be happier about it.  Here is a small preview of some things we have been working on:

Reason #1 to be excited about March:

The Steppin' Stones will take the stage at the Charleston Pour House on March 24 along with The Vegabonds and Piano to play what is always a mind-blowing show.  We're extra excited about this one because The Steppin' Stones haven't played in Charleston since December, so they will surely show the lowcountry some hometown love. You can find more information about the show and RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Reason #2 to be excited about March:

It's time to say a bittersweet goodbye to local favorite Oysters on the Point by celebrating in the sand on March 12th from 2pm-6pm.  And before we even have time to be bummed about the end of OOTP season, we arrive at...

Reason #3 to be excited about March:

Party at the Point is set to return to its homeland--  the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina on Friday April 29th. Party at the Point will kick off the season with Departure: The Ultimate Journey Tribute Band. This event is one of the most popular and anticipated series of the summer, and for good reason. What better way to soak in the summer sunshine than dancing in the sand, surrounded by the beautiful Charleston Harbor and all your friends?

Reason # 4 to be excited about march:

Quentin Ravenel is working on some awesome new projects and Ear For Music is so excited to work with him as these continue to grow.  Quentin Ravenel and Friends is a Charleston staple. If you are familiar with Charleston nightlife you have definitely heard his band rocking the house somewhere.  Anyway, definitely check him out if you're looking to boogie. The video below is just the tiniest example of the ridiculous things this guy can do.

A Last Hoorah for Oysters on the Point

Well, it has been an amazing season of one of our favorite event series of the year, Oysters on the Point.  We are both sad and excited to say a bittersweet goodbye on March 19.  This event will be highlighted by performances by some of our favorite bands & will feature appearances from our long awaited warm spring weather.  Chase Martin and Southwood will both perform during the event which takes place from 2pm-6pm. We hope to see you there!

A little something different

Ear For Music Brides span a wide spectrum of musical tastes.  This post is for the type of EFM bride looking for a more unique act that will set them apart from their friends and families while still bringing amazing entertainment that will keep their guests dancing all night. We are so excited to be working with such talented artists!

Leo & Luna

Leo and Luna is the musical child of newlyweds, Lee Barbour and Vikki Matsis. Lee Barbour is a world-renowned jazz musician and Vikki Matsis is a singer/songwriter. Together, they are sharing their favorite songs with others on their wedding day and for other cherished events. Leaving the well-worn wedding playlists to other bands, they aim for a lively yet understated sound. The Beatles, Ray Lamontagne, Bill Withers, and John Legend are just a few of the artists they interpret.

The River City Dixieland Jazz Band

Formed in Charleston in 1997, River City  is a dedicated group of professionals who specialize in the presentation of traditional American Jazz, "N'Orleans style".  The "Holy City" can now say
that it has that spirited sound that's rarely heard out of New Orleans...real Dixieland Jazz!  Guests can sing to familiar tunes like "Ain't She Sweet", "Bill Baily Won't You Please Come Home", and of course they can try their luck dancing to the city's most famous tune,  "The Charleston." The band's rendition of Louis Armstrong's "Hello Dolly" is always a crowd pleaser as well as "Muskrat Ramble", "Sweet Georgia Brown" and their traditional red-hot closer "When the Saints Go Marching In."

Artist Spotlight- DJ NattyHeavy

We love working with DJ NattyHeavy, and since he is celebrating becoming a new dad to a beautiful baby girl this week (yay!) we couldn’t think of a better time to feature him as our artist of the month to add to the list of things to celebrate.

Nate Lopes, one of the most in demand DJ/host in the Lowcountry, goes by the moniker DJ NattyHeavy. Nate began his career at the tender age of 13 in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. He now resides in Charleston, SC where he has solidly made his name in the entertainment arenas.

Along with being a freelance DJ and event host, Lopes also serves as a mix show DJ with multiple drive time and weekend slots on WWWZ. NattyHeavy’s accolades in radio earned him a Charleston City Paper Music Award as voted by the people of Charleston, SC.

Throughout the years Lopes has gained enough experience to become a mentor to many DJs in the New England and Southeast region. He has worked with international recording artists, corporate parties, countless weddings, charity events, as well as bars and clubs serving as DJ and host for their events. His musical library boasts over 45,000 songs, meaning he is highly versatile and will tailor your event to the appropriate criteria. He encourages crowd interaction while staying true to the roots of authentic DJ skills. Skills that set the artist up to be recruited by the internationally renowned group Tropix International Sounds and the Los Angeles, California based The Club Bullies.

We’re so excited to be teamed up with such a talented guy!

Mark Bryan to join Radney Foster in serenading the lowcountry

Mark Bryan may have risen to fame playing guitar for Hootie & The Blowfish, but his dedication to the Charleston music scene on every platform imaginable has made this fact a simple line item on a resume packed with accomplishments.  When Mark isn’t teaching class to arts management students at the College of Charleston, (a program that he helped create,) he is co-writing music, producing albums, lending background vocals, guesting with other artists and acting as a mentor to students who want to break into the industry. So for those of you even mildly familiar with this man’s ambition and commitment to the Charleston music scene, it won’t come as any surprise that Mark has graciously agreed to accompany Radney Foster at the Woolfe Street Playhouse this February the 26th to make what was already going to be a most spectacular evening even more special.

Radney Foster's Anticipated Return to Charleston

One of the coolest things about the live music experience is the way you get to know an artist through seeing them perform.  Music fans try to replicate this through watching concert videos on youtube or listening to soundboard recordings of their favorite artists, but there are some things that you just cannot experience without buying a ticket to the show.  Radney Foster is a prime example of one of these performers.  If you ask anybody who has seen him perform, the first thing they will tell you is how amazing of a storyteller he is, both in his honest lyrics and in the way he speaks about his songs during the concert experience.  Foster has written some of the most prolific folk songs that the genre has ever seen, and have been recorded by Gary Allan, Sara Evans, Keith Urban andJack Ingram.  But his penned works for others do not outshine his own commercial successes; his first solo album produced four consecutive Top 40 hits and he would have nine others over the next decade, including "Just Call Me Lonesome" (#10, 1992) and "Nobody Wins" (#2, 1993).  So those are just a few of the reasons why we are so excited to share this musical evening with all of our friends in the lowcountry.  You can find tickets here and RSVP to the event on Facebook here.  Mark your calendars for February 26th, y'all! If you aren't familiar with Radney's tunes, take a listen below.

RIP

Charleston lost a beloved member of our community, Gary Alameda.  Gary ran G’s Hot Dogs and for most of us visiting his hot dog cart after work, after the bar, or just for a late night snack was the best part of our night.  Our hearts our heavy as we say goodbye to Gary.  For more information on Gary and how you can donate to a Go Fund Me started by his family visit: https://www.gofundme.com/doit4g
